I have had many people ask me what is the difference between Local SEO and National SEO. Quite honestly it is pretty simple if you look at it from traditional marketing efforts such as the Yellow Pages, Newspapers and other types of traditional marketing. The answer is the customer base you are seeking. If you are a local plumbing company in Atlanta, GA you are going after local customers in the Metro Atlanta area. If you are large bank then you are going after customers in a much larger area such as the Southeast US or the entire US or Globally. The fact is the larger area you want to attract business the more competitors there will be. The more competitors mean more money to be spent on the advertising because of the amount of competition you’re competing against. Back in the old days if you wanted a front page ad in the Yellow Pages you may spend $20,000 or more a month in a local market and in a national market that number may be in the hundreds of thousands. It is the same with SEO.
Let’s break it down. If you are a local plumber you may only have 10-15 real online competitors that are continuously doing some sort of SEO to their website. They are continuously adding new links, blog posts, press releases, etc. each month. The difference in traffic to their website by being #1 on Google verses being #5 can mean a difference of hundreds of leads each month which translates into thousands of dollars lost. The price range for local SEO is anywhere from $500-$5000 per month depending on competition in that local market.
If you are a national bank you may be have hundreds of online competitors that are also continuously doing a heavy amount of SEO. They are also adding links, Blog posts, Press Releases, etc. each month but on a much larger scale. When you have this many competitors everyone is trying to get a leg up on each other to get the best positioning to reach their target market. The difference in leads from the #1 spot to the #5 spot can be as much as a hundred thousand visitors a month. This equates to hundreds of thousands of dollars lost in sales. The price range for national SEO is anywhere from $5000-$25,000 per month depending on the industry, competitive nature of the keywords and company.
The fact is SEO is a vital part of any companies Internet Marketing strategy. Without it you will not be found on the Search Engines, not enough of it will give you poor rankings and with the right amount of SEO will ensure for a successful Internet Marketing campaign which will drive leads to your company which will translate into sales. The important thing to remember is the more competition you have the more expensive it will be because more work will need to be done to get the rankings you desire. When pricing SEO out for your local or national businesses don’t cut corners. Just because someone else is cheaper doesn’t mean they are better. It is more important to spend more money to ensure the job gets done the right way otherwise it can set you back.
